Character Animation in Blender 2.5 with the Norman Rig

Norman

I worked some more on the Norman Rig and made a video manual, covering Blender 2.5 usage. If you are an animator and want to give Blender 2.5 a try, then this is for you!

Go to the download section and try it, please! It is all free :)

Great initiative Ivo, and very well executed. Now I have something I can refer colleagues to when preaching blender at work and hopefully ease the endless questions about features they cannot find and workflows they do not understand :)

  2. There is a danger that I might be boring: The rig is great, but Ivo animation toolbox is pure gold! Aaaaaand, it works with other armatures, too. Thank you!

  3. John Carter says:

Weird. I’m installing the Ivo addons into the applications>blender>contents>MacOS>scripts>addons, but they are not showing up in the blender preferences. Am I missing something?

  4. Ivo says:

I could not test the addons on a mac. However to verify that the path is correct, open the python console in blender and type bpy.utils.script_paths() and hit enter. Does it match yours? Another possibility is that your blender revision is too old/new (the python api seems to have changed again recently after releasing this). 34624 works for me. Also do you get any errors when starting blender in the terminal?

  6. John Carter says:

Ivor, my mistake. I glossed over your note about using the latest Blender test build. Once I built and installed this your addons installed correctly and work just fine.

Thank you very much for responding and thank you for your work on the Norman port to Blender. It’s great :)

    - Cheers!

  7. John Carter says:

Oh, and thank you Ivo for the instructional video. Not only is it a great manual for using your Norman rig, but it is a very good Blender primer for those of us coming from CA animation in other programs. I’m going to point a few people to it :)

    - Cheers!

  8. Charles Kim says:

This is great one and I really want to learn them soon.
where can I find the menu-armature-human? I only can get a single bone in blender 2.5.

  9. dagobert says:

I did try to instal your addon but last 64 bit blender version 2.56a do not support it. On graphicall r34812m do not sup^port it neither. In fact only 32 bit verson support it.
God work . Hope a 64 bit version will be release soon.

  10. Charles:

    You’ll find Norman with Shift + A -> Rig -> Norman

  11. DaveLeitz says:

This add-on should work regardless of the OS, 32 or 64 bit. It is written in Python script, which is platform independent. I’m using 64bit Ubuntu Linux. This script works fine up to 2.56-r34678. I have multiple versions of Blender from Graphicall on my system, including a couple of the latest for my system.

Very recent changes in Blender Python api in just the last week or so have broken this tool kit as well as several other rigs and rendering exporters I’ve been playing with. I can only wonder if the developers will ever reach a point where it is considered “stable enough” that add-ons don’t break so frequently. For example, I just got Frankie from Big Buck Bunny to work in 2.56 with rigging control sliders in the properties panel, and now it’s broken again. I’m trying to learn Python, but I can only go so fast. ;)

  12. Ivo says:

Yeah, i did not update all scripts to work with the recent revisions, sorry. It is a very tedious thing, also hope we will reach a phase were the python API will be more solid. Also most of my patches don’t work anymore and i don’t have time to work on that either :(

Do you have any further plans for this rig port..
For instance the ability to customize the model itself?

I am not certain if it would the same situation as listed here:
    http://animationbuffet.blogspot.com/2008/03/norman.html

Since blender shape keys are different?

  15. Stephen says:

Has anyone found a build that works with Mac PPC – this looks fantastic, but haven’t found a build that works yet, and not smart enough to build my own yet ;)

  16. Moritz says:

This is such great work, thank you! This really helps getting into animation with blender.

  17. Ian S says:

Great rig! Although, I’ve found that it doesn’t seem to fully work in blender 2.57a… do u plan to make it compatibility to future versions?

  18. RigsJuarez says:

The question might sounds weird. How Can I modify the mesh?

The file only contains the norman_rig and norman_rig_proxy.

  19. Yo Ivo!!
Nice job man!! I really want to work on blender now!!!!
Hope you’re fine and see you soon!
    Buena serata!
